Michelle Wie will be playing in a men's event rather than the Ricoh Women's British Open at Sunningdale next week because organisers could not decide whether to invite her to the showpiece competition.

Having heard nothing from the Ladies' Golf Union about a wild card, Wie accepted an invitation to play instead in the Reno-Tahoe Open on the men's PGA Tour in Nevada.

On hearing the news, the LGU said they had been considering a last-minute invitation. "We planned to monitor her performance in this week's Evian tournament in France," Susan Simpson, the LGU's tournament director, said. "If she did well, we were going to get in touch, but now that she's agreed to play with the men that's presumably the end of it."

The Ricoh have missed a trick. True, the crowds will enjoy watching players such as Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa, but Wie, 18, has a golfing magnetism all her own.

Simpson said that while the LGU were aware of what a good draw the player would have been, they felt they could issue an invitation only if her play justified it.
